Tragic motorcycle crashes in Colorado bring attention to liability issues

Posted on March 28, 2018 in

More people are enjoying the benefits of riding a motorcycle than ever before. Not only are motorcycles often less expensive to own and operate than cars and trucks, they are also more environmentally friendly than many cars, allow the rider to use the carpool lane and, according to some riders, provide an opportunity to connect with the environment that is not possible while riding in a car.

Although there are many benefits associated with riding a motorcycle, it is important that riders also be aware that those involved in motorcycle accidents are far more likely to face serious injury or death. Cars and trucks offer their occupants a level of safety not present when on a motorcycle.

Motorcycle accidents are not uncommon, and Colorado recently experienced two tragic accidents. One accident occurred when a motorcycle was attempting to change lanes and was hit by a passenger vehicle. The collision caused the rider to be ejected from his motorcycle and land in the road where he was hit by oncoming traffic.

The second accident involved two motorcycles and four riders. For unknown reasons, one motorcycle collided with another and caused all four riders to be ejected. One rider was pronounced dead at the scene while the others were transported to the hospital after suffering serious injuries.

Recent research by government agencies finds that serious motorcycle accidents are on the rise. A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that fatalities connected to motorcycle accidents more than doubled from 2000 – 2010. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also taken note of the increased death toll associated with motorcycle accidents in recent years. The agency conducted a study and found that the highest death and injury rates were suffered by 20 – 24 year-olds.

Causes of motorcycle accidents

Motorcycle accidents can be caused by a wide range of factors. Motorcycles are more difficult to operate and are less stable than passenger vehicles and drivers of cars and trucks may not watch for bikes.

Riders can proactively reduce their rate of injury or death by wearing helmets and taking motorcycle classes when first learning to ride. However, even when riders take protective measures, accidents can happen.

Victims of motorcycle accidents may be eligible to receive compensation to cover the cost of medical and rehabilitative expenses as well as pain and suffering if the accident was caused by the negligence of another. Contact an experienced motorcycle accident attorney to discuss your situation and better ensure your legal rights and remedies are protected.
