How to Make a Winter Vehicle Safety Kit

Getting your vehicle ready for the harsh conditions of winter can be integral to reducing the chances of equipment malfunctions. Despite your best efforts, however, you may still experience a wintertime breakdown or collision, leaving you stuck on the side of the road, waiting for help in potentially freezing conditions.

If this happens, having a winter safety kit in your vehicle can be essential to avoiding further problems, remaining warm and safe and getting the assistance you need.

Getting Started

Before delving into a discussion of the items to include in winter vehicle safety kits, here are some helpful things to know and keep in mind as you get started:

  • Keeping a kit in every vehicle you and/or others in your household drive can prevent anyone from forgetting to move the kit from car to car before each trip.
  • For each vehicle, be sure to keep the kit somewhere that it can be accessed even if the locks of a vehicle freeze over. In other words, if you want to keep the kit in your trunk, make sure you have access to your trunk from the vehicle cabin. Otherwise you may not be able to get a hold of this kit when you really need it.

What to Include in Each Winter Vehicle Safety Kit

Transportation safety advocates recommend that, when assembling winter vehicle safety kits, you include at least the following in them:

  • Vehicle-related items so that you can try to get your car running again (if possible); these things can include:
    • Basic tools, such as a hammer, a screwdriver, a snow shovel, an ice scraper, etc.
    • Tools to try to get a vehicle back on the road, such as jumper cables, tow chains, snow chains, kitty litter/sand, etc.
    • Other necessities, such as flares/cones, rope, duct tape, a flashlight, batteries, etc.
  • Safety-related items so that you (and any occupants traveling with you) are able to remain warm and safe if you have to wait for help; these things can include:
    • Things to help you stay warm, like a blanket, a hat, socks, chemical hand warmers, etc.
    • Things to help you stay nourished, like water, energy bars and other nonperishables
  • Other items, which can include:
    • Communication devices, such as an extra cellphone and charger
    • Entertainment-related items, such as a radio, magazines, a tablet, a deck of cards, etc.
