Graduation, whether it be from high school or college, is one of the happiest moments in the lives of many Colorado students. This can be a time to let off some steam and celebrate with friends and family. Unfortunately these celebrations can result in tragedy when drinking and driving is involved. Sadly,drunk driving accidents have ruined the lives of many people all across the country.
Last year, 30 percent of all Colorado road accident fatalities occurred as a result of accidents that involved impaired driving. A total of 142 people were killed in these Colorado tragedies. To prevent more devastating accidents, Colorado law enforcement is cracking down on drunk driving during the graduation season. Colorado officers have arrested over 500 drivers under the suspicion of driving under the influence since early April.
Drivers who have previous convictions may face even more serious consequences. Colorado law now makes impaired driving a felony offense if the driver has three previous DUI convictions. Despite all the warnings and potential consequences, such as death and serious injuries, many people still make the unfortunate choice to drive while under the influence of alcohol.
Those who have been harmed in a drunk driving accident may never fully recover from their emotional and physical injuries. However, they may be able to recover financially. Courts will determine who is responsible for the accident and that person may have to pay damages to the victim of the accident.
